Stephen "Steve" Loss, 75, of Manchester, PA, passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at UPMC Memorial in York. Born in York on June 24, 1950, Steve was the son of the late Harry F. and Frances (Garrett) Loss. The eldest of six children, he was also predeceased by his youngest sister Deborah Loss.
Steve was a vibrant member of the community whose concern for others was matched only by his sense of humor. After graduating from Delone Catholic High School in McSherrystown in 1968 and attending Bowling Green State University, he worked for the Manchester-Mount Wolf sewage plant for over a decade, serving the public during the Three Mile Island accident. In 1990 he established his own computer consulting business, Stephen Loss & Associates, in Manchester. His work, which included custom-made software, repairs, and networking, took him around Pennsylvania and into Maryland, but he was best known and loved by local clients in Harrisburg, Manchester, York, and Hanover. A lifelong learner with a thirst for knowledge, he took classes at several colleges, including Penn State York, and for a time he taught classes at York Business College.
Steve learned to love horses and horse racing from his parents and grandparents, and by the age of ten he had become a self-described "stable bum" at Hanover Shoe Farms. Later in life he enjoyed live racing, especially at Penn National. A former lifeguard and SCUBA diver, Steve loved the water and boating. He savored trips to the Maryland and Jersey shores and to the Gulf Coast of Florida, and he had a deep appreciation for the Chesapeake Bay. He loved old movies, good food, and conversation.
He is survived by two sons, Robert Loss and his wife Jamie, of Columbus, Ohio, and Daniel Loss and his wife Alex, of York. Additionally, he is survived by four siblings: Cathy Loss and Pamela Loss, of Hanover; Greg Loss, of Hagerstown; Patrick Loss and his wife Brinda, of Salem, Utah. He's also survived by a grandson, an expected granddaughter, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A celebration of life service will be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday June 4, 2026 at Panebaker Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Inc., 311 Broadway in Hanover with The Rev. Sam Miller officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation,
Attn: Membership Department, 6 Herndon Avenue, Annapolis, MD 21403 or to the Deb Loss Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o St. Joseph School, 5125 Grandview Road, Hanover, PA 17331.
