Shirley L. Smith

Shirley L. Smith, 87, of Granger, Indiana, entered into God’s eternal care on June 5, 2026.

Shirley was born in Hampstead, Maryland, on April 13, 1939, to Mabel Emma (Tracey) Bosley and Leroy Ellsworth Bosley. A gifted student, she excelled in various sports, including track and field and volleyball, while also distinguishing herself in business education studies.

After graduation, Shirley began her career as a secretary in Baltimore. In 1963, she married the love of her life, Raymond J. Smith, and together they shared fifty-eight years of marriage until his passing in 2022. Shirley devoted herself to raising their four children and creating a loving home in Hanover, Pennsylvania. She was an active Cub Scout den mother and rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on her children from the sidelines, whether at sporting events, cheerleading competitions, or other school activities. Her family always knew they could count on her encouragement, support, and unwavering presence.

A woman of deep faith, Shirley was a longtime parishioner of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Hanover, Pennsylvania, and later St. Pius X Catholic Church in Granger, Indiana. Her faith, kindness, and devotion to family were evident throughout her life.

Shirley will be remembered for the countless ways she cared for those she loved. Her strawberry angel food cakes were a favorite at family gatherings, and in later years she enjoyed creating intricate diamond art projects. She loved gardening and took great pride in growing beautiful flowers that brightened her home and brought joy to those around her. She also enjoyed watching Baltimore Orioles baseball and cheering for her favorite team throughout the season. Above all, she treasured time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, whose lives were enriched by her love, encouragement, and gentle spirit.

Shirley is survived by her children, Michael (Nancy), Matthew (Patti), Jeremy (Brenda), and Erin Putt (Chris); her eleven grandchildren, Andrew, Amanda, Kevin and Caroline Smith, Heather Aleshire and Cory Smith, Madelyn, Adam and Emma Smith, Eloise and Evan Putt; four great-granddaughters; and her siblings, Robert Bosley, Ralph Bosley, and Edith Tracey.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of fifty-eight years, Raymond J. Smith; her twin granddaughters, Hayley and Hannah Smith; her brothers, Donald Bosley and Kenneth Bosley; and her infant sister, Dorothy Bosley.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 220 Third Street, Hanover, Pennsylvania. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the Mass. Interment will follow at St. Vincent Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Shirley’s family finds comfort in knowing she has been reunited with Raymond and all those who went before her. Her legacy of faith, love, kindness, and devotion to family will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
