Lawrence (Larry) Underriner, 90, loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away on July 19, 2025, in Hanover, PA. He was born on August 23, 1934, in Hempstead, NY to Lawrence and Lillian Underriner.
Larry served in the United States Navy on the USS Carter Hall from 1955 to 1957 as a Machinist Mate. During his training in Milwaukee, he met the love of his life, Joan, at a student nurses mixer. They married in 1955 and lived in San Diego, CA. Upon discharge, they moved to Binghamton, NY, where he was employed by Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital for 37 years as Director of Engineering. This position led Larry to the Daughters of Charity Health System East traveling to many hospitals throughout the country as a Construction Project Manager. He finished his career working with the Daughters of Charity St. Joseph’s Provincial House in Emmitsburg, MD as Assistant Administrator for Plant Operations.
Larry’s father and grandfather were carpenters, so it was natural for him to become interested in woodworking. When space in their home for additional furniture was no longer available Larry moved on to mastering the art of creating Shaker oval boxes and trays. His many talents didn’t stop there. He was known by family, friends and fellow church members as the multitalented person to be consulted upon when something needed to be built, repaired, or replaced including everything from auto repairs and home renovations to major building construction.
He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Joan Bauman Underriner, of Hanover, PA two sisters, Martha Guando and Laura Stevens; four children, Larry Underriner, Jr., (Cindy) of Cazenovia, NY, Carolyn Zimmerman (Wayne) of Clarksville, MD, Lisa Ford (Walter) of Ocean View, DE, and Beth Underriner of Hampstead, MD; six grandchildren, Alynn Underriner (Tyler), Tyler Underriner (Erin), Keenan Underriner (Taylor), Rachel Zimmerman (Greg), Nicole Zimmerman, Scott Zimmerman (Sydney); and seven great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be at 11 AM on Friday, August 22, 2025 at Homewood Chapel, 425 Westminster Ave, Hanover. Burial will take place in Mount Olivet Cemetery with military honors being rendered by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in his memory to Homewood Benevolent Fund, 425 Westminster Ave Hanover PA 17331.
