Joseph H. “Joe” Buffington, 95, of York, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 27, 2025 at Encompass Health in York.
Born on Friday, May 2, 1930 in the Midway community of Hanover, he was a son of the late George V. and Mary (Cramer) Buffington. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Janet E. Buffington, who died in 2008; and nine siblings, Thelma Senft, Jacob, Pauline, George, Virginia, James and William Buffington, Nancy Smith and Patricia Seymore.
Joe will be remembered as a hard worker who worked as a presser and dry cleaner throughout his career. He was a former employee of Middleburg Manufacturing, owned and operated the Taneytown Cleaners and after retiring, he was employed by Palms Dry Cleaning and Laundry. Joe was a Hometown Hero having served with the National Guard. He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hanover Lodge #763 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Hanover Republican Club, McSherrystown Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #720, AmVets Post #22, the Hi-Y'all Campers, and the Hanover Pacers Square Dancers. He enjoyed gardening and exercising, but always had a passion for animals.
Survivors include his daughter, Sharon Buffington Cunningham and husband , Sam, of York; a grandson, Michael Bruckart and wife, Angela, of Huntersville, NC; two great-grandsons, Gabriel and Ethan Bruckart; two sisters, Dorothy Kehr and husband, Linwood, and Linda Eltz, all of Hanover; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on July 26, 2025 at Panebaker Funeral Home, 311 Broadway in Hanover. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the York County SPCA, 3159 N. Susquehanna Trail, York, PA 17403.
