Burnell A. Groft

Burnell A. Groft, 91, of Hanover, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 5, 2025 at Columbia Cottage.

Born on Wednesday, September 19, 1934 in McSherrystown, he was the son of the late Earl and Minerva Strausbaugh Groft. He was also preceded in death by his lifelong companion, Mary A. Houser, who died on June 22, 2025; three sons, Nelson, Tobias and Terry Groft; and siblings, Earl Jr., Dick, Dot and Fred. Burnell owned and operated the B. Groft Barbershop and was a well-known steel guitarist, having played for local bands such as, Ambush, the Workin’ Man’s Band, the Charlie Jeffery’s Band, the Twilight Entertainers and the Country Capers. A US Army veteran of the Korean War, he enjoyed playing cards and was a member of the McSherrystown Home Association.

Survivors include a son, Tim Houser and his wife, Deborah; a daughter, Trudy Funke and her husband, Charles; three grandchildren, Terry Houser, II and his wife, Tilyn, Kirby Houser and his wife, Krystal, and Jessica Kump and her husband, Chad; and four great-grand children, Cameron, Chase and Callen Kump and Amelia Houser.

A private service is being planned.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
