Ann Harman, 94, of Hanover, passed away on Monday, September 29, 2025 at Misericordia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born on Monday, May 4, 1931, in York, she was a daughter of the late Maurice Roche and Lelia Newland Roche. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Clarence “Clem” Harman, who died in 2023; and five siblings.
Ann was born in York County and attended Roundtown Elementary until 6th grade and graduated from New Oxford High School in 1948. She attended East Stroudsburg University with a major in physical education, but became homesick and returned after her first semester. Ann married Clem July 22, 1950. After moving from New Oxford to York, Ann began transporting Special Education students for LIU, then went back to college. She attended York Jr College, Penn State York Campus and graduated from Millersville State College after 15 years while teaching on an emergency certificate and going to school part time. Ann received a B.S. degree in Elementary Education and Special Education, a masters in Special Education, and a supervisory certificate in special education. She retired June 2002 as a supervisor of York County Special Education, Yorkshire Center after 41 years.
In her retirement, Ann loved to spend time with her family and friends. She took pride in tending to her property, and especially loved to mow her grass. Ann loved sports which included the Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Chiefs and Penn State. Above all, Ann took great pride in her grandchildren and great grandchildren and their sports. She also loved her cat, Lady, dearly.
Ann was a former member of Shadowfax Corporation Board of Directors, a lifetime member of Council for Exceptional Children, member of National Association of School Principals, and was active in York County Special Olympics in its formative years. She was awarded outstanding educator in 2002 by the First Capital Pennsylvania chapter Phi Delta Kappa, awarded Council for Exceptional Children Special Educator of the year in 2001. After retirement, Ann moved to Hamilton Township and was very involved on the township committees.
Survivors include her daughter, Lonna Ashton and her husband, Dennis, of York; two granddaughters, Dr. Jenna Ashton Dagenhart and her husband, Chad, of Denver, CO, and Tessa Hullfish and her husband, Patrick, of Macungie, PA; and two great grandsons, Laughlin and Keiran Hullfish, of Macungie, PA.
A service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, October 10, 2025 at St. Paul’s “The Pines” Lutheran Church, 1535 Hunterstown Hampton Rd, New Oxford. A visitation will be held one hour prior. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.
