James D. Martin

January 18, 1940 - March 4, 2022

James D. “Jim” Martin, 82, of Hanover, husband of Rita M. Breiner Martin, entered into God’s eternal care on Friday, March 4, 2022 at home surrounded by his family. Born on Thursday, January 18, 1940 in Hanover, he was the son of the late Dorothy Mae Martin. A 1957 graduate of Eichelberger High School, Jim was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society, served as a Special Minister of the Eucharist, lecter, altar server and usher, and was passionate about the cancer support group at the church. He was a member of the Hanover Knights of Columbus, the McSherrystown and Hanover Home Associations, Hanover Elks BPOE Lodge # 763 and the Hanover Area Council of Churches. Jim was a former employee of SJ Groves in Shiremanstown, TRX of New Oxford and Valley Quarries in Shippensburg. He was very proud of the many units of blood that he donated, but most of all, he was loved by all who knew him and will be missed by everyone whose life he touched – especially his children and grandchildren. In addition to, Rita, his wife of nearly 46 years, survivors include a son John Bevenour, Jr. and his wife, Ellen, of Hanover; three daughters, Christine Balzanna and her husband, Reb, of East Berlin, Deanna Martin, and Alissa Stevens and her husband, Ryan, all of Hanover; eleven grandchildren, Brittany, Alexa, Joel, Kaci, Kyle, Aundre, Daunte, Damon, Ayana, Rylee and Devyn; and two great-grandchildren, Lettie and Nora. He was preceded in death by his mother and sister, Shirley Lightner. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 11: 00 AM Tuesday, March 8, 2022 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with The Rev. Joseph F. Gotwalt and The Rev. Msgr. James M. Lyons serving as concelebrants. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. The family will receive friends at St. Joseph Church from 6 to 8:00 PM Monday, with a prayer service at 8:00 PM, and from 9:30 to 10:30 AM on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sponsor a Sister, c/o St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5055 Grandview Road, Hanover, PA 17331.
