Betty A. Wise

September 19, 1942 - February 13, 2022

Elizabeth A. “Betty” Wise, 79, of Hanover, entered into God’s eternal care on Sunday, February 13, 2022 at UPMC Hanover following a four month deterioration of her health. Born on Saturday, September 19, 1942 in Hanover, she was the daughter of the late Robert J. and Mildred I. Ziegler Eckenrode and wife of 53 years to the late Lee R. “Bupp” Wise, who died in 2016. She was the fourth great-granddaughter of Patrick McSherry, a patriot and founder of McSherrystown. Elizabeth studied in London and at Cambridge University in England and earned two degrees with honors from the University of Maryland. Dedicated to education, her career spanned 27 years teaching elementary school in the Catholic School system, with the majority of her years served at Annunciation BVM School. Elizabeth was awarded the “Who’s Who among American Teachers” numerous times. A devout member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, she was active with their School of Religious Instruction. She volunteered at the Hanover Hospital’s Gift Shop and Library. Elizabeth was a member of the Col. Richard McCalister Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, Xi Theta Zeta Sorority Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi and Alpha Sigma Lambda, a national honor society at the University of Maryland. A social lady, she enjoyed spending time with her sorority sisters and her family and friends. Extremely dedicated to her commitments, she was involved as an active participant and contributor on many levels. She had a sharp wit that paired beautifully with her late husband’s humor. Elizabeth had an avid interest in antiques which she shared with her son. She was an antique dealer at both Yesteryear and New Oxford Antique Centers since 2014. Elizabeth is survived by her son, Richard Lee “Rick” Wise of Hanover; a sister, Sylvia Mosser and her husband, Bruce; a nephew, Mark Mosser and his wife, Carrie Ann, all of Williamsburg, VA and a niece, Marsha Fallon and her husband, Jason of Virginia Beach, VA. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 am Saturday, February 19, 2022 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5125 Grandview Ave., Hanover with Father Samuel Miller serving as celebrant. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) General Fund, P.O. Box 98286, Washington DC 20090-8286 (please make checks to Treasurer General) https://www.dar.org/giving/support-special-iniative/nsdar-general-fund-area-greatest-need
